Phyllostachys viridis is also known as the giant bamboo for good reason,  it is a slowly-running bamboo that reaches to 25 to 40 feet tall in the perfect conditions of California or the everglades but here in Ireland it will grow tall but not anything close to that. As it spreads slowly it can be easily maintained as a clump or a smaller grove, rarely causing problems exhibited by other more rapidly spreading Phyllostachys species.  So you get the beauty of the height without the nuisance of the spread! The new stems emerge a pea-green colour that are  speckled with dark brown which contrast interestingly.  The mature stems which are golden yellow with seemingly random and variable-width dark green longways  stripes.
