Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Description

Cercidipyllum japonicum, also known as Katura, is a hardy medium to large-sized deciduous tree native to Japan and China. In its younger years it maintains a neat conical shape, before becoming more widespread and rounded in its habit as it matures. It’s heart-shaped leaves emerge a deep reddish colour in the spring, maturing to green for the summer, and then progressing to yellows and rich oranges in its autumn display. In autumn, the changing leaves also emit a beautiful strong fragrance that resembles candy floss or burnt sugar. Maximum height 8-12m, spread approximately 8m.
