Description
Like a perfectly sculpted topiary masterpiece, the half standard Euonymus japonicus brings instant formal elegance to Irish gardens with its distinctive lollipop silhouette and lustrous evergreen canopy. This architectural gem combines the classic appeal of traditional formal gardening with modern versatility, creating striking focal points that maintain their sophisticated presence throughout our ever-changing seasons.
The glossy, dark green foliage forms a dense, rounded crown atop a clear stem, creating dramatic contrast and visual interest in both contemporary and traditional garden settings. Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in late spring, followed by attractive pink fruits that split to reveal orange seeds – a delightful surprise for wildlife and garden observers alike. The naturally compact growth habit makes this an ideal choice for structured plantings and container displays.
Originating from Japan and Korea, this resilient evergreen has proven remarkably adaptable to Irish coastal and inland conditions, tolerating salt spray, urban pollution, and challenging soils with admirable tenacity. The half standard form offers all the benefits of this hardy species whilst providing the elevated structure perfect for underplanting and creating layered garden compositions.
Plant in pairs to frame entrances alongside Buxus sempervirens spheres, or use in rows for formal pathways with Lavandula angustifolia beneath. Perfect for container gardens, courtyard features, or as elegant sentries flanking seating areas in your Irish garden sanctuary.

Plant in well-prepared soil with good drainage. Space half standards 2-3 metres apart for formal rows, or use individually as specimen features. Excellent for container growing in pots minimum 50cm diameter using quality multipurpose compost mixed with garden soil.
Tolerates wide pH range (6.0-8.0) and various soil types including clay, sand, and chalk. Drought tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during first growing season. Apply balanced fertiliser in early spring and maintain mulch around base.
Trim lightly in late spring to maintain shape of crown. Remove any growth from the clear stem immediately. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain dense foliage. Responds well to topiary shaping if desired.
Division not applicable for standards. Propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer, though half standard forms require professional grafting techniques and are best purchased as established specimens to ensure proper form and strong root development.
