Description
The Prunus avium ‘Regina’, commonly known as the Regina cherry tree, is a late-season sweet cherry cultivar originating from Germany. It is admired for its compact, upright growth and dark green, toothed leaves. The tree produces abundant white blossoms in spring, which later develop into large, dark red cherries with a sweet-tart flavour. Additionally, the cherries are suitable for culinary applications, including baking, preserves, and desserts. These cherries are highly resistant to rain-cracking and are harvested in mid to late July. The Regina cherry tree is not self-fertile and requires pollination partners.
Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny, sheltered location to ensure optimal fruit production. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, but overwatering should be avoided. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and control weeds. Pruning is recommended in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches and improve air circulation.
