Description

A gorgeous, shade-friendly perennial with soft, feathery flower plumes that lift a border and add that “garden in layers” look. Astilbe ‘Ellie’ is especially lovely for bringing colour and texture to damp, humus-rich areas — think woodland-style planting, shady borders, and beside water where other plants can struggle.

Why you’ll love it

  • Perfect for shade: Thrives in partial shade and woodland-style gardens
  • Beautiful texture: Ferny foliage + airy flower plumes
  • Great for damp spots: Ideal where soil stays reliably moist
  • Pollinator-friendly: A gentle magnet for bees in summer

Quick Facts

  • Botanical name: Astilbe ‘Ellie’
  • Plant type: Herbaceous perennial
  • Flowering: Summer
  • Best for: Shady borders, woodland gardens, damp beds, pond edges, containers (kept moist)
  • Position: Partial shade (can take sun if soil stays moist)
  • Soil: Moist, fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Hardiness: Very hardy

Description

Astilbes are one of the best ways to make shade feel lush rather than flat. ‘Ellie’ forms a neat clump of finely cut foliage, then sends up elegant plumes that hover above the leaves like soft candles. It’s a plant that looks especially good in groups — repeated through a border, it creates a calm, cohesive feel.
It’s also a brilliant partner for hostas, ferns and heucheras, bringing flower and height without ever feeling heavy.

Where to plant

  • In a shady or dappled border where you want summer colour
  • At the front of a woodland-style planting scheme
  • In moist ground near a pond or stream edge
  • In a large pot (as long as you can keep watering consistent)

Care & planting notes

  • Watering: Don’t let it dry out — consistent moisture is the secret to success
  • Mulch: A spring mulch helps hold moisture and feeds the soil
  • Deadheading: Optional; leave spent plumes for texture, then cut back in late winter/early spring
  • Dividing: Every few years if clumps get crowded (also a great way to bulk up planting)

Caragh’s Garden Notebook

If you’ve a tricky shady corner, don’t fight it — lean into it. Astilbe + ferns + hostas is one of the most reliable combinations for that lush, “cool garden” feeling. Add a few spring bulbs through the area and you’ll have interest from February right through summer.
