Description
Like scattered pools of moonlight in your garden, Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ brings an ethereal quality to the English landscape with its stunning silvery-blue foliage that seems to glow in both sunshine and shadow. This compact ornamental grass creates perfect spheres of colour that remain beautiful throughout the year, offering structure and elegance to gardens of every style.
The fine, needle-like leaves form neat, dense tufts that catch the light beautifully, creating an almost metallic sheen that intensifies in our cooler climate. In early summer, delicate buff-coloured flower plumes dance above the foliage like tiny fireworks, adding movement and texture before fading to attractive seed heads that provide winter interest.
Named after the biblical prophet, this cultivar represents one of the finest blue fescues available, selected for its exceptional colour intensity and compact habit. Its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in challenging conditions makes it invaluable for modern Irish gardens, whilst its evergreen nature ensures year-round structure in borders and containers.
Perfect for creating contemporary garden designs, ‘Elijah Blue’ excels in gravel gardens, rock gardens, and as edging for borders. Its compact size makes it ideal for container planting, whilst mass plantings create stunning drifts of silvery-blue that complement both hot and cool colour schemes beautifully.
Caragh Garden Notebook
Plant in well-drained soil with excellent drainage being essential – add grit or sharp sand to heavy clay soils. Thrives in poor, sandy, or chalky soils and actually performs better in low-fertility conditions. Space plants 30cm apart for individual specimens or 20cm for mass planting effect.
Prefers full sun for best colour development but tolerates partial shade. Very drought tolerant once established and requires minimal watering. Avoid rich, fertile soils or excessive moisture which can cause the centre to die out.
Comb through with fingers or small rake in early spring to remove dead foliage and maintain tidy appearance. Cut back flower stems after blooming if seed heads aren’t desired. Replace clumps every 3-4 years as centres can become woody.
Divide in spring by carefully teasing apart sections with roots attached. Grows easily from seed sown in spring, though named varieties may not come true to type. Excellent for attracting small birds who enjoy the seeds.
Wonderful for year-round structure and pairs beautifully with lavender, sedums, and other Mediterranean-style plants. Creates stunning contrasts with purple or burgundy foliage plants.
